The Radio: The Misfit Guide To Now

Or What To Do When 'Business As Usual' No Longer Fits

This is for those of you who know how to play the existing game. But increasingly feel:

  • Out of synch with business as usual,

  • That you don’t want to fit in like you used to and

  • More and more frustrated with the existing way of doing things.

And probably deep down you know you are here for more. But for what exactly and how do you get there?

We are at a collective turning point - in the midst of a system shift - and you are being called to your role in this transition.

This episode is part manifesto - calling you to rise to a new level of your potential, purpose and impact. And part guidebook to what you are meant to be doing now at this pivotal time.

So here it is. The full episode you can listen to, is above. And below is the article with the core insights.

1. This Is A Point Of Choice Beyond Business As Usual

You are at a fork in the road - a pattern interrupt calling you to seriously consider the future you want.

If you have been successful in the existing system but now feel increasingly out of sync with business as usual, it is not random. It is telling you that this is a pivotal time and that what you do next matters - both personally and collectively.

We are in the midst of a system shift. The AI disruption, upheaval to the world order, and the sustainability crisis are shaping the future at a completely different level than we could have ever imagined. And our response to this perfect storm matters like never before.

What is happening now is not some small course correct. It is foundational and fundamental. We stand at a crossroads in terms of the future - the one we actually want and the one we will have. And those are two very different things.

So if our future is being shaped like never before, the real question becomes: are we going to passively allow that future to be shaped, or are we going to become an active actor in shaping it?

The friction you are feeling is a pattern interrupt on your business as usual - a pause on your everyday autopilot. It is a recognition that you are standing at a fork in the road. And depending on which fork you choose, the future will look very different - for you and for us all.

The reason you are feeling out of sync is because you are being asked to look at what your place in all of this is. Will you just sit passively or will you start shaping the kind of future that you want to see? Because let’s face it where we are headed right now is not great.

So what does that have to do with the misfit - the you that doesn’t fit into the old ways of doing things?

Business as usual has become about optimising the status quo. That means sustaining what is currently in place. Managing how things have always been done. And maintaining what already exists with a bit of incremental innovation.

But that will not do the course correct we need for our future. Reorganising the deckchairs on the titanic does not stop us from sinking.

What this moment is asking of us - is to reimagine what comes next. And that needs intentional creation capacity on steroids.

Beyond painting by numbers within the existing lines, it means being brave enough to face the blank canvas. And to draw the new kind of world we actually want to live in next.

My favourite quote says that: ’If you don’t fit into the existing world, it is because you are here to create a new one.’

So if you don’t fit into business as usual, maybe it is because you are here for this new world. Not to just reorganise the old - but to build the new.

To choose to create what comes next. To craft a new future with care. To bring this new chapter to life. Not a dystopian one, but one of flourishing for people and planet.

In your friction with ‘business as usual’ is the question: Will you answer the call to the new adventure of creating the future?

2. Your Misfit-ness Is Your Mission Now

In the gold of your difference lives your new role for this time of systemic transition.

The key question is: where exactly do you feel like a misfit? Because in that misfit-ness lies what you are meant to do now.

The area where you feel different - that is where the seeds of your right contribution now live. Your different values. Your different strengths. Your different perspectives and ideas.

Most of us were taught to contort ourselves to fit into how things were done. Because fitting in meant survival. School trained us to perform within the status quo and to tick its traditional success boxes - even if at a big internal cost.

But if it is becoming harder to hold the gap between who you really are and what the system asks of you, there is a reason. It is because you are now meant to come back to who you were always meant to be - before the world told you who you should be.

That is where your purpose now lives.

If we want to shift systems, we cannot keep being good soldiers of the old status quo. We have to become brave builders of the new future we want. To be the ones who chart a course through the unknown - who create what doesn’t exist yet and shape what comes next.

That is where your misfit-ness is your superpower. Your difference is not the problem. Your difference is the solution. It is where the new originates.

The seeds of the future are waiting in the place you never fit. Because rather than taking on the shape of the old world, that is where you kept your own shape.

And that is what we need now.

In the gold of your misfit-ness is the answer to: What is my role in this time of transition?

3. Your Role Is To Carve New Pathways

Beyond good soldier of the old, you are here to be a way-shower, mapmaker and architect of the new.

Now is the time to ride the strong slipstream of new possibility that is emerging.

As the existing system shakes, shape-shifts, or even falls, business as usual keeps us firefighting the uncertainty, unknown and unstable. Rather than chart our course to what comes next.

That is because we cannot use old maps to build a new world. You cannot control chaos - in the hope of getting back to a ‘normal’, that is already outdated.

You are here to catalyse new opportunity - to create new roles, new business models and new sectors. To fundamentally reshape things. And rather than accelerate our descent into hell - to rise for a positive collective future.

So how can you contribute to this wave for the new?

In traditional change management, the future is already designed, mapped and you build a bridge to it.

Right now, the future is yet to be written.

So this is not about crossing an existing bridge. It is about being catalysts - both to create a new future and to build the bridges of transition across.

In that the brave builders of the new future have three roles:

  • The Way-Shower - still embedded in the existing system, bringing ideas of the new, planting seeds and orienting people’s minds toward new possibilities.

  • The Mapmaker - inventing templates and models of the new, approaches, philosophies and ways of living, working and leading that create the new on the ground.

  • The Architect - weaving together ecosystems and infrastructure of the new. Protected spaces that function differently so a new future can be brought to life - and then are plugged back in later.

Each level requires more of you. More uniqueness. More courage. More nervous system capacity to stand outside of what already exists - and to guide and show the way to the new world that is waiting to be built.

So what is it that you are you being called to now? Way-shower? Map maker? Architect?

Let me know.

Until Next Time,

Louise
