Here is this week’s episode of The Guide on How To Make Decisions In Uncertainty: Stop Spinning Your Wheels And Start Asking The Right Questions.

The Limitations Of The 4Fs

One of the things that I am seeing right now is that it is easy to spin our wheels with all the current uncertainty. To get caught in what I call the four Fs of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. And the 4Fs impact our capacity to make the right decisions - and to know what to do next.

What we are being called to do now is to navigate in a new way - by making new choices, accessing new creativity, and charting our course with new courage. But when we are spinning our wheels in the four Fs, we cannot access choice, creativity, and courage.

The Shift To The 4Rs

So what we need to do is to start asking ourselves questions based on the four Rs - which are:

• Recenter in yourself: What is true for me now?

• Reconnect to what you need: What do I need at this time?

• Reflect on what you want to create: What do I want create here?

• Realign your actions: What would I love to do?

Why It Matters

Why we talk about this in The School is that if you stay in the 4Fs you are limited in how you react.

Literally your brain can only give you as options to get aggressive, control, run away, deny, hide or try and appease your way out of the situation. And we are noticing that a lot of leaders are acting from here at the moment - which is leading us away from the kind of future we want.

The Key To A New Future

In contrast at the School what we are doing is activating and equipping ourselves to create the future at a new level - both personally and collectively and in the midst of the current chaos.

So we train ourselves to stop reacting from automatic reactions. And to start responding in new ways - whatever is going on out there.

At the core, this is the choice to get back into our intentional creation capacity - based on what is true for us, what we see is really needed and what we want to create for ourselves and others during these times.

The 4Rs are a way of self-coaching yourself out of reaction into conscious creation. And if you do it by going on a walk that is even better to shift your brain.

This applies to whether you are starting out or have been at it for a while. To whether something does not feel right or is unclear, things are actually collapsing around you or you cannot seem to get any forward momentum whatever you try.

The are three shifts you need to make. So that you are aligned to your purpose for this specific period:

1. Understand Your New Purpose For The Transition

We are now in a systemic transition - driven by the AI disruption, the intensifying of the sustainability crisis and the upheaval to the world order as we know it.

What that means is that we need to focus not just on sustaining what already exists, with tweaks in innovation. But that we are in a time of shape shift. And we are being called to intentionally shape what comes next,

So ask yourself: ’What is my purpose during this time of transition? What is mine to do during this period of shape shifting of our system?’

2. Upgrade Your Brain Operating System

It is not anymore about just being a good soldier of the old status quo, plugging the gaps in the existing system, simply rebelling against it, or just trying to bring a bit of change.

We have to ride this wave towards a much more fundamental shift.

And that is all about becoming the brave builders of the future that we want to see next - both personally and collectively.

So ask yourself: ‘What would it mean to play full out at this time? What hidden parts of me do I need to bring forward now?’

3. Create What Comes Next

Now is the time to consciously create a new future. And that means being willing to step out of our comfort zone. To colour well beyond the existing lines.

That means going to a completely new level of creation capacity. Where we create what comes next.

Knowing that is not a box that already exists out there - that we have to find. But that it is something that doesn’t exist yet - that we have to imagine and bring to life.

So ask yourself: ’What am I being called to create now? And how far out of my comfort zone do I need to step into this new possibility?’

That means that a new skill you have to develop is the capacity to create the new roles - those that will build what comes next. The roles that will be directed towards creating the new kind of future we want to see.

It is a very different way of thinking about jobs - and also of approaching your job search.

These days it is not going to be enough just to send your CV out there. What you need to learn to do is to articulate your value at a completely different level - in a way that is meaningful for these times that we are in.

And from there, partner with others. So you can create together these new roles. Those that will be the new vehicles for this new kind of value you will be adding.

And they are asking a lot of questions because of the collapse happening in that sector - especially in the humanitarian field. And also because of the intense pushback they are experiencing right now.

What we have to understand is that we are in a different purpose phase now - that one book has ended and we are called to write a new book.

That means each one of us has to look at our purpose within the context of the times we are in now. We have to evolve and adapt our purpose for the systemic transition that has already started. By finding what is ours to do at this time.

The short answer is we create them. Because the kind of jobs that are going to get us to the future that we want to create next are not the jobs that got us to where we are now.

In this time of system shift, we have to look at everything based on this time of transition and the fact that we have to step into a different level of creation capacity.

And so we have to create the new jobs.

That means being able to articulate our value at a completely new level. And to partner with others to create new roles that are fit for the future we want to see - and don’t exist yet.
