We are in a time of transition. We have moved from skiing on-piste down existing tracks to skiing off-piste - where uncertainty, the unknown and the unstable are the norm.

And you do not ski off-piste the same way you ski on-piste.

This is why we need a different conversation about how to navigate these times. And where the chrysalis is a useful analogy.

8 Lessons From The Chrysalis

1. We Are Not in Business as Usual Anymore

We are no longer in a time of relative stability where we could follow existing tracks and make predictable progress.

We have shifted into a time of uncertainty, deep unknowns and increasingly unstable external circumstances. Yet many leaders are still trying to respond by controlling the uncontrollable or by trying to get back to where they were before.

But is not going to work.

We are not skiing on-piste anymore. We are skiing off-piste, and that requires a different way of navigating.

2. This Moment Is a Systemic Chrysalis

One way to understand what is happening is to see it as a chrysalis.

You enter the chrysalis as a happy caterpillar and get pummelled in ways you could never have imagined. Before eventually emerging as the butterfly you did not even know you could be.

This process is happening both personally and collectively. It asks us to evolve beyond what we can currently imagine rather than pushing harder on linear plans, objectives or KPIs.

3. The Chrysalis Works Through a Three-Part Dynamic Process

The chrysalis is not a linear process.

The chrysalis is a dynamic process where three things are happening at the same time. Certain things are ending. Others are shape-shifting and transforming. And others are beginning anew.

Understanding this dynamic helps us recognise what is actually happening. Instead of assuming that everything should simply continue working as before.

4. Stabilising Starts with Accepting Endings

Because this is a system shift, many of the endings we are experiencing are foundational. Certain structures, ways of working and assumptions we took for granted are collapsing. This process is often chaotic rather than orderly.

We are not gently ushering endings with intention. We are experiencing random destruction.

Stability does not come from controlling the external environment. It comes from accepting what is ending. Becoming intentional about what you are leaving behind and what is actually remaining.

5. Notice What Is Weathering the Storm

Alongside the endings, certain things will remain. They may not be the things you expected. It is important to notice what is weathering the storm.

Once you recognise what is remaining, you can stabilise by focusing your energy there. Instead of repeatedly trying to revive what is not meant to come with you.

6. Some Things Will Stay But Shape-Shift

Not everything disappears. Some aspects will come with you but in a different form.

They transform so they can serve the next phase of what is emerging.

In my own work, the themes of leadership, change-making and pivotal moments remained. But they shifted context.

Instead of focusing on change within the existing system, they moved toward supporting the collective transition between systems and the creation of a new future.

7. This Is a Moment of Creation

The third aspect of the chrysalis is creation.

It is about seeding and birthing what does not yet exist.

One reason this period feels so unsettling is that there are no maps for where we are or where we are going. We have to make them.

This moment asks us to retrieve our capacity to create. And to use our imagination in new ways instead of simply continuing along the tracks we have always followed.

8. The Chrysalis Is an Evolutionary Upgrade

The reason the chrysalis metaphor matters is that the caterpillar inside it feels like it is being destroyed.

It feels like chaos and collapse. But in reality, something new is being formed.

The caterpillar could never imagine that it could become a butterfly.

In the same way, this moment may feel destabilising, but it is also an opportunity to evolve and create something that we have yet to imagine.

12 Quotes From The Episode

“We are not in business as usual anymore. We are in a time of transition.”

“We have shifted from skiing on-piste down existing tracks to skiing off-piste - where uncertainty, the unknown and the unstable are the norm.”

“You don’t ski off-piste the same way you ski on-piste.”

“Many leaders are trying to control the uncontrollable or get back to where they have always been. But increasingly feel:

Out of synch with business as usual,

That you don’t want to fit in like you used to and

More and more frustrated with the existing way of doing things.

And probably deep down you know you are here for more. But for what exactly and how do you get there?

We are at a collective turning point - in the midst of a system shift - and you are being called to your role in this transition.

This episode is part manifesto - calling you to rise to a new level of your potential, purpose and impact. And part guidebook to what you are meant to be doing now at this pivotal time.

So here it is. The full episode you can listen to, is above. And below is the article with the core insights.

1. This Is A Point Of Choice Beyond Business As Usual

You are at a fork in the road - a pattern interrupt calling you to seriously consider the future you want.

If you have been successful in the existing system but now feel increasingly out of sync with business as usual, it is not random. It is telling you that this is a pivotal time and that what you do next matters - both personally and collectively.

We are in the midst of a system shift. The AI disruption, upheaval to the world order, and the sustainability crisis are shaping the future at a completely different level than we could have ever imagined. And our response to this perfect storm matters like never before.

What is happening now is not some small course correct. It is foundational and fundamental. We stand at a crossroads in terms of the future - the one we actually want and the one we will have. And those are two very different things.

So if our future is being shaped like never before, the real question becomes: are we going to passively allow that future to be shaped, or are we going to become an active actor in shaping it?

The friction you are feeling is a pattern interrupt on your business as usual - a pause on your everyday autopilot. It is a recognition that you are standing at a fork in the road. And depending on which fork you choose, the future will look very different - for you and for us all.

The reason you are feeling out of sync is because you are being asked to look at what your place in all of this is. Will you just sit passively or will you start shaping the kind of future that you want to see? Because let’s face it where we are headed right now is not great.

So what does that have to do with the misfit - the you that doesn’t fit into the old ways of doing things?

Business as usual has become about optimising the status quo. That means sustaining what is currently in place. Managing how things have always been done. And maintaining what already exists with a bit of incremental innovation.

But that will not do the course correct we need for our future. Reorganising the deckchairs on the titanic does not stop us from sinking.

What this moment is asking of us - is to reimagine what comes next. And that needs intentional creation capacity on steroids.

Beyond painting by numbers within the existing lines, it means being brave enough to face the blank canvas. And to draw the new kind of world we actually want to live in next.

My favourite quote says that: ’If you don’t fit into the existing world, it is because you are here to create a new one.’

So if you don’t fit into business as usual, maybe it is because you are here for this new world. Not to just reorganise the old - but to build the new.

To choose to create what comes next. To craft a new future with care. To bring this new chapter to life. Not a dystopian one, but one of flourishing for people and planet.

In your friction with ‘business as usual’ is the question: Will you answer the call to the new adventure of creating the future?

2. Your Misfit-ness Is Your Mission Now

In the gold of your difference lives your new role for this time of systemic transition.

The key question is: where exactly do you feel like a misfit? Because in that misfit-ness lies what you are meant to do now.

The area where you feel different - that is where the seeds of your right contribution now live. Your different values. Your different strengths. Your different perspectives and ideas.

Most of us were taught to contort ourselves to fit into how things were done. Because fitting in meant survival. School trained us to perform within the status quo and to tick its traditional success boxes - even if at a big internal cost.

But if it is becoming harder to hold the gap between who you really are and what the system asks of you, there is a reason. It is because you are now meant to come back to who you were always meant to be - before the world told you who you should be.

That is where your purpose now lives.

If we want to shift systems, we cannot keep being good soldiers of the old status quo. We have to become brave builders of the new future we want. To be the ones who chart a course through the unknown - who create what doesn’t exist yet and shape what comes next.

That is where your misfit-ness is your superpower. Your difference is not the problem. Your difference is the solution. It is where the new originates.

The seeds of the future are waiting in the place you never fit. Because rather than taking on the shape of the old world, that is where you kept your own shape.

And that is what we need now.

In the gold of your misfit-ness is the answer to: What is my role in this time of transition?

3. Your Role Is To Carve New Pathways

Beyond good soldier of the old, you are here to be a way-shower, mapmaker and architect of the new.

Now is the time to ride the strong slipstream of new possibility that is emerging.

As the existing system shakes, shape-shifts, or even falls, business as usual keeps us firefighting the uncertainty, unknown and unstable. Rather than chart our course to what comes next.

That is because we cannot use old maps to build a new world. You cannot control chaos - in the hope of getting back to a ‘normal’, that is already outdated.

You are here to catalyse new opportunity - to create new roles, new business models and new sectors. To fundamentally reshape things. And rather than accelerate our descent into hell - to rise for a positive collective future.

So how can you contribute to this wave for the new?

In traditional change management, the future is already designed, mapped and you build a bridge to it.

Right now, the future is yet to be written.

So this is not about crossing an existing bridge. It is about being catalysts - both to create a new future and to build the bridges of transition across.

In that the brave builders of the new future have three roles:

The Way-Shower - still embedded in the existing system, bringing ideas of the new, planting seeds and orienting people’s minds toward new possibilities.

The Mapmaker - inventing templates and models of the new, approaches, philosophies and ways of living, working and leading that create the new on the ground.

The Architect - weaving together ecosystems and infrastructure of the new. Protected spaces that function differently so a new future can be brought to life - and then are plugged back in later.

Each level requires more of you. More uniqueness. More courage. More nervous system capacity to stand outside of what already exists - and to guide and show the way to the new world that is waiting to be built.

So what is it that you are you being called to now? Way-shower? Map maker? Architect?

Let me know.

Until Next Time,

Louise

Join The Purpose-Led Adventure: The New Field Guide To The Future. There is no return to the old normal.

What makes this time so confusing is that we are on a new adventure - a new quest - because we are living through a system shift. This is no longer something theoretical. It is here. It is being felt everywhere.

What many are now experiencing is rupture: the breaking of systems, structures, and the sense of security that once defined normal life. These ruptures are not random; they are showing us clearly that there is no going back to the old system.

2. What is breaking is showing us what part of the old system is ending.

Collapse is revealing where change is now unavoidable.

When viewed through the lens of system shift, collapse can be navigated differently. It shows us what must end for the new to rise.

Without that lens, people often panic, freeze, or wait for things to return to normal - even though normal is no longer available.

Our only way forward now is through the storm. And while the process is painful, we have to remember that endings are never just endings. The seeds of the new beginning already exist. Like the phoenix rising, the ashes themselves hold what wants to emerge next.

3. Purpose must be redefined for this time of transition.

It is not just ‘what is my purpose?’ but ‘what is my purpose now?’

We are all being called to go beyond ‘purpose in general’, and ask ourselves what our purpose is for this time of transition. What it means for us to contribute to this time of in-between system: to guide, steward, invent, and build bridges from what is ending to what is trying to be born.

Even those who have walked a purpose-led path for decades are being asked to reorient. Purpose must evolve with the current context. What worked before may no longer be fit for this time, and holding onto outdated forms of security can make the transition harder.

4. The loss of outer security places us in the wilderness between systems.

The next world hasn’t been built yet - and that is why we feel lost.

As outer security falls away, many people find themselves in the wilderness - the space between systems. The old boxes no longer exist, and the new ones have not yet been built. This is why so many feel lost at sea and don’t know what to do next.

The uncomfortable truth is that the people experiencing collapse are often the very ones meant to go first - and actually create what comes next. There is immense creative energy available now - but only when we step into our work and leadership for the transition.

5. The future is being shaped right now like never before.

We either allow ourselves to be shaped, or we step up to shape what comes next.

The future is being shaped right now like never before. We are standing at a crossroads where very different futures are possible.

The real choice is whether we allow ourselves to be shaped by what is happening - becoming prisoners of the past or hostages to the present - or whether we rise as brave builders of the new future we actually want to see.

This is not passive work. It requires powerful forces of love capable of reshaping systems and building foundations for genuine human and planetary flourishing.

6. This moment requires a completely new level of creation capacity.

Not managing the status quo - but intentionally creating the future.

Most people were trained to manage and reorganise what already exists. When what we need now is to create what is yet to be imagined.

This moment calls for us to give our own shape to what comes next: off-piste creation, deep trust in our unique ways of seeing, and the courage to build new maps and architecture - not just new technologies, but new visions of value, economy, society, and of humanity itself.

7. We are in a chrysalis of profound shapeshifting.

Collapse is redirecting, rewiring, and preparing us for our next chapter of impact.

This moment is an intense chrysalis. A time of shapeshifting. A tunnel where the external light has gone out. And where the only way forward is to switch on our own. Some are going first.

Collapse is not punishment - it is the crossing of a threshold. It reveals what is we are leaving behind, what must take a new form, and who we are being asked to become for our next chapter of impact.

8. Misfits are being activated because their misfitness is their mission.

They are here to go first - the transition team that guides, builds and shows the way to the new.

The misfits are those who succeeded in the old system yet never quite felt like they fitted in. It can offer new possibilities, where we can start to create our own opportunities.

Article

A major shift is in progress in how we need to think about purpose-led work. This is not something a lot of people are talking about, but it matters because in the middle of all the change and uncertainty, there are new opportunities and new possibilities emerging. The challenge - and the invitation - is to understand what is actually happening, so that you can start creating your own pathways in this new context.

The Three Traditional Silos - Job, Career, Calling

Traditionally, we have approached work in three siloed ways.

The first is getting a job, where work is primarily about paying the bills. Success here is measured in financial stability and survival. And work is simply transactional.

The second silo is building a career, which has been the typical corporate path. Here, the focus is on climbing the ladder, gaining power, status, and influence within existing structures. Success is measured by promotions, financial packages and getting to the top of the ladder.

The third silo is pursuing a calling and making a positive impact and usually has meant joining the not-for-profit or humanitarian sector.

The Evolving For Impact Landscape

Historically, these were treated as separate paths, and if you wanted impact, you often sacrificed financial gain, status or influence to follow that calling. These silos held for a long time. They created clear choices: do you focus on money, power, or impact? But those divisions are now collapsing.

The humanitarian sector is facing major cuts and uncertainty, and international organisations are struggling to sustain themselves. Meanwhile, corporate and for-profit spaces are also shifting under public pressure and new expectations around purpose - no longer insulated from societal and systemic pressures.

A vivid example is the late-night show host Jimmy Kimmel being taken off air by ABC, leading to a mass, self-led global movement where people canceled subscriptions, holidays, and more, ultimately impacting Disney’s share capital by billions.

That movement wasn’t organised or orchestrated - it emerged spontaneously, showing how purpose now resonates beyond traditional sectors. And how we have entered a new era - where the public is willing to mobilise quickly and where collective action can majorly influence corporations overnight.

The lesson is clear: purpose can no longer be siloed off. It now intersects with everything. It is not just for those seeking a calling, nor irrelevant for career-driven roles. It is no longer confined to a particular sector or career track. Ignoring purpose now can carry real costs - financial, reputational, and personal.

A New Angle On Purpose-Led Work

The good news is that looking at purpose from this different lens opens the door to creating roles and opportunities that didn’t exist before.

You can integrate purpose, impact, and leadership wherever you are, and make meaning, influence and money coexist. Corporate changemakers, intrapreneurs, social entrepreneurs - all are contributing to meaningful work in new ways. And increasingly, these roles are creating new career paths where none existed before.

What this shift offers is immense opportunity. The lines between for-profit and for-impact are blurring, allowing us to weave a new ecosystem of meaningful work. We are no longer limited to existing structures or predefined roles. This is a time to colour beyond the lines, create new paths, and design new roles. To invent them, shape them, and build them.

Work For A New Future

Ultimately, the future of purpose-led work is to step beyond the silos and to build impact into everything we do. And the system shift we are in makes that easier. In that it is asking us to rethink what kind of world we want to live in - and what work will create the future we want to see next.

If we define positive impact as contributing to genuine human and planetary well-being, we start to see new opportunities emerge - roles, initiatives, and partnerships that didn’t exist before. We can work across sectors, collaborate in new ways, and create new types of meaningful work that align with what truly matters.

Purpose-led work today is not about choosing one path over another - it is about weaving the path itself, wherever you are, and designing roles that offer a new level of societal value.

Ultimately, it is about building a world where your work contributes to genuine flourishing - for people, communities, and the planet - while also sustaining you. And shaping a new kind of ecosystem of meaningful work - that is future-ready.

Subscribe to get notified of and receive new episodes of The Purpose-Led Radio directly to your inbox

Quotes

“The silos between job, career, and calling are collapsing - and with that comes new ways to create meaningful work.”

“Purpose is no longer confined to a sector or a predefined role - you can integrate it wherever you are.”

“If you don’t fit into the existing system, it is because you are here to create something new.”

“This is a time to colour beyond the lines and design the opportunities that the future needs now.”

“Weaving purpose into what we do is no longer optional - it is how we create real impact in this system shift.”

“Roles, initiatives, and partnerships are emerging that didn’t exist before, and we get to build them.”

“Positive impact today means contributing to genuine flourishing for people and planet.”

“It is not about choosing one path over another - it is about creating the path itself.”

“The system shift we are in is asking us to rethink what work can be, and what meaningful contribution truly looks like.”

Dig Deeper

Listen To Other Radio Episodes:

New Careers In The Evolving Impact Landscape

To Find Or Not To Find A Job

Three Lessons From The Collapse

For the guidance, frameworks and insights to build together your purpose-led roadmap to new meaningful work in this time of transition, then join us in The Purpose-Led School here.

Invite me to speak at your event, run a masterclass for your team or to have a conversation on your podcast by either direct messaging me here or emailing me at me@louiselegat.com

The Radio: Flow Is Your Compass, Map And Navigation System

Listen Now | Flow Is The Key To Walking Your Unique Path Of Purpose At This Time Of Transition

Louise Le Gat

In this episode we explore how to build our own purpose-led roadmap to navigate through the uncertainty, unknown and unstable context we are in.

At the core is the idea that the key is flow. In this episode I explain the up-level we need to make. So that we do not just keep plugging the gaps of the existing system. But start to play our part in creating what comes next.

Those of us who have been working in the for-impact and for-purpose field for years are now being asked to evolve how we understand our mission.

Many of us assumed we would simply continue as we always have. But because we are living through a system shift created by the perfect storm of the sustainability crisis, AI disruption, and the upheaval of the world order as we know it, our purpose and impact also have to shift.

We can’t keep playing the old game when the game itself is changing. This in-between time is calling us to name what is happening, take our place in the transition, and play the unique part that only we can play.

What surprised me was realising that after years of doing purpose-led work, I needed to fundamentally up-level in three areas for this time.

The first is reorienting your mission for the transition. We are no longer here to plug the gaps of the old system or convince the status quo to evolve. That breakdown is already happening. Our job now is to look toward what comes next and consciously shape it. This means stepping into the in-between rather than pretending we are still in business as usual - building the plane as we fly it and creating the foundations for a paradigm of genuine flourishing.

The second shift is giving ourselves a fundamental software upgrade. Because we can’t create a new world with the internalised software of the old one. Most of us were trained to be good soldiers of the old status quo - to perfect, please, appease, or rebel against it. But none of those positions actually create evolution. This moment requires us to dismantle that internalised system, break our addiction to the performance paradigm, recalibrate what we believe has true value, and retrieve our uniqueness at a completely different level. We need to become the version of ourselves who can do this - who can guide people beyond the existing game and lead in new ways.

The third shift is recognising that what we are here to do next may not exist yet. In a time of collapse and uncharted territory, there are no ready-made roles to step into. Someone has to create what comes next - the pathways, the maps, the entirely new expressions of impact. And for those of us who have always walked our own path, this is our time. Not escape. Not give up. But pause with purpose. That is what I call the retreat habit - the practice of turning inwards for answers that can’t be found outside of us.

This idea of retreat isn’t about green juices or booking a spa weekend. At its root, it is about stepping back from the busyness - not to disappear, but to regroup. To withdraw from the external chaos and reconnect with a deeper inner compass.

For me it is a simple habit that I call the Four Rs of Retreat: Recenter. Reconnect. Reflect. Realign. It is not about having the perfect conditions - just 15 minutes a day to ask: 'Where am I actually coming from today? What is true for me now?'

This has become a lifeline. A quiet wayfinder through the times we are in. Especially when the world outside doesn’t make much sense. Because when we are disconnected from that part of ourselves, we end up out of sync - in our work, our leadership, our lives. The outer and inner no longer match, and at this time it means just being thrown from wave to wave.

The reality of now, is that we can’t keep building our lives around someone else’s map. The tracks we were taught to follow are being redrawn - if they exist at all. This is the moment to lay your own tracks. And that begins by coming back to yourself. Not just for ‘me time’, but to truly listen in. To the voice that tells you the truth. That knows the way. That can show you not just what to do, but who you need to become next.

That is why the retreat habit is so important. It is how we source direction from within. It is how we stay aligned with what we are here to create - even when things are uncertain, unknown or unstable. Because purpose doesn’t arrive neatly packaged. It emerges through space, reflection, and the courage to listen. And it begins, always, by returning to your own truth.

Join the conversation on this in the chat. Where are you at in terms of your retreat habit? Here is the direct link to the conversation on this.
<div class="community-chat" data-attrs="{"url":"https://open.substack.com/pub/thepurposeledadventure/chat?utm_source=chat_embed","subdomain":"thepurposeledadventure","pub":{"apple_pay_disabled":false,"apex_domain":null,"author_id":90131069,"byline_images_enabled":true,"bylines_enabled":true,"chartable_token":null,"community_enabled":true,"copyright":"Louise Le Gat","cover_photo_url":null,"created_at":"2025-01-16T19:28:09.150Z","custom_domain_optional":false,"custom_domain":null,"default_comment_sort":"best_first","default_coupon":null,"default_group_coupon":null,"default_show_guest_bios":true,"email_banner_url":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/5a89546a-0ea9-48f6-b50a-574c7384ba52_1100x220.png","email_from_name":null,"email_from":null,"embed_tracking_disabled":false,"explicit":false,"expose_paywall_content_to_search_engines":true,"fb_pixel_id":null,"fb_site_verification_token":null,"flagged_as_spam":false,"founding_subscription_benefits":["The Purpose-Led Retreat with its Wayfinder Visualisations, Prompts and Sessions To Help You Step Into Your True Direction At This Time"],"free_subscription_benefits":["The Radio Episodes, The Letters Articles & The Wisdom Inspiration"],"ga_pixel_id":null,"google_site_verification_token":null,"google_tag_manager_token":null,"hero_image":null,"hero_text":"Purpose is not a destination. This is not business as usual anymore. And, we need to start navigating from where we are and where we actually want to go - rather than where we wish we were.

The way I see it is this. We are already in the middle of the ocean. The perfect storm is here - through the combination of the sustainability crisis, AI disruption, and the upheaval of the world order.

Yet for the most part, we are still behaving as if we are safely moored in port. We carry on as if incremental tweaks will be enough, when in reality, the tools we currently have simply aren’t fit for purpose anymore. And we risk missing an important opportunity.

Whether we like it or not, this is a system shift - and the only real choice is whether we let ourselves be shaped by it or step up to shape what comes next.

This moment isn’t just about plugging gaps or managing short-term crises. It is about recognising that the very foundations of our systems are shapeshifting. And we get to decide the future we want to see.

Because while endings are unavoidable, there is also real hope here. The fact that the old is collapsing means there is now space to build new better things. The uncomfortable reality being that our existing foundations were not designed for true long lasting thriving - of people, planet, or ourselves.

That is where the opportunity lives. Rather than chasing the next shiny object or getting stuck in overwhelm, what is really needed now is a conscious choice: to hold this systemic transition in a way that activates new possibilities, new leadership, and new creation ecosystems that can bring about the future we actually want.

But that will not happen by default. It requires each of us to find our own potentiality within this context, to step into a new level of leadership, and to help shape solid foundations for genuine flourishing - within ourselves, with each other, and with the planet itself.

Quotes

“We are already in the middle of the ocean - navigating a storm with hundred-foot waves - whether we like it or not.”

“The tools we currently have are not the ones that will get us through; this isn’t about incremental tweaks, it’s a system shift.”

“Either we let ourselves be shaped by the forces disrupting life as we know it, or we step up as active participants in shaping what comes next.”

“The world as we have known it is collapsing. We get to decide whether there are new beginnings - and if so, what those new beginnings are.”

“This is no longer about plugging the gaps of the old system. It’s about asking fundamental questions: what does it truly mean to flourish?”

“We are all in the boats now. Change-making is no longer reserved for the few - we all have to steer.”

“There’s real hope here. When a system is locked in place, it’s hard to evolve it. It is the price of travelling off-piste and walking your own path. But it is in those very moments- those challenges - that we find the growth spurts leading to new levels of impact.

Right now, in this time of transition, something deeper is unfolding. Speaking with many leaders, a clear theme emerges: we are grappling not only with systemic collapse but also with unexpected personal collapses.

So in this episode, I wanted to explore what these times of collapse are really calling us toward.

SUMMARY

The last few years have been a major initiation for me - not the one I wanted, but the one I needed to do the work I am meant to do now. I came to understand that I was undergoing the shapeshifting necessary to pass through the eye of the needle.

I learned that there is a tightrope to walk when shifting from one system to another - from one set of values to a new paradigm. As leaders, we need to radically rearrange ourselves in order to create what comes next.

Here are the three core shifts I had to make to remould myself and move through the chaos - the awareness and a map I wish I had earlier hoping it helps you.

Your Purpose For The Transition

First, I had to redefine my purpose within this new context - letting go of the idea that I was simply continuing what I had always done.

This isn’t just about pivoting or adapting as we have done before. It is about recognising we are in a profound transition - one that demands we stop plugging the holes in a sinking system and instead write a completely new book.

That means redefining our purpose through the lens of systemic transition. And reimagining how we contribute to building a new world from the ground up - that has its actual foundations in flourishing and wellbeing.

From Performance-Driven To Purpose-led

Next came the uncomfortable realisation that even after 25 years in the purpose space, I was still sourcing my value from performance.

Our inner software, shaped by a system that rewarded productivity and performance, can’t build what is next. We need a purpose-led mindset, not just a performance-driven effort.

And for that we have to rewire our unconscious software from outer competition to true inner worth.

Creating Through Emergence

And finally, I had to reconfigure how I create. The old ways - linear plans and control - no longer work in the unknown we are navigating.

What does work is emergence: trusting the intelligence of life, partnering with your own knowing, and letting go of the maps that no longer apply.

It is artistry, not strategy.

It is about learning to co-create with the unknown, trusting that what is needed will emerge - not from control, but from intuition, creativity and aligned action.

That is how we find our way forward - not back to business as usual, but into the world that is trying to be born next.

Specific Quotes

“You can’t build a new system with old software.”

“This isn’t about adapting to business as usual - it is about stepping into a deeper, more fundamental shift.”

“My purpose didn’t end. I realised I was being called to write a new book entirely.”

“Even though we aspire to be purpose-led, a huge chunk of our programming is still performance-driven.”

“You can’t build the new from the past. We have to build the new from the future.”

“Each time I tried to hold on, things would collapse. When I accepted I was meant to evolve myself to travel beyond my comfort zone - that is when new things emerged.”

“We are transfixed by the collapse - but what we need is to step into the transition.”

“Part of the challenge is that the new doesn’t exist yet - and we have to create it before we can walk across.”

“This is not about planning the future. It is about partnering with life to create it.”

“We need to stop plugging the gaps and start redesigning the foundations.”

“Think less Gantt chart, more artistry. And for many of us they are triggering deeper questions - where we feel successful on the outside but are asking deeper questions about our life, work and leadership. And specifically what our part is to play in these times.

In this episode, Louise digs deep into what these important turning points are and how to navigate them within the greater context that we are living in.

EPISODE OVERVIEW

We are living through a time unlike any other. We are standing at the threshold of what I call a collective pivotal moment.

These Are Not Ordinary Crossroads

For the last twenty five years, I have been focusing on the concept of individual pivotal moments - these profound turning points that call us to fundamentally reshape our lives, work and leadership. And how you navigate them.

What is different about the pivotal moment we are in now is how it stretches beyond the individual, and what that means in terms of finding your way through it.

Traditionally, pivotal moments were personal - crossroads that came either from external success that felt strangely empty or from life-shaking events like illness, redundancy, or loss. They interrupted the tracks of our lives and forced us to ask deeper questions about who we are and what we are here to do.

Today, something different is happening. The world itself is at a pivotal moment. The sustainability crisis, AI disruption, and the upheaval of the world order are shaking us all at once - and in turn, triggering personal turning points on a much wider scale.

Pivotal Moments In A Time of System Shift

At its essence, this pivotal moment is an ending and a new beginning. It is waking us up, snapping us out of autopilot, and showing us what is no longer working - both in our lives and in our collective systems.

It invites us into deeper alignment with who we truly are and the purpose and impact we are meant to have at this time. The question becomes not just what do I want? But what is mine to do within this greater transition we are in?

The trap many fall into at this time is trying to solve this by looking for the perfect external destination in the existing system: the ideal job, NGO, or business. Or trying to get stability by controlling their existing environment.

But that is not how this pivotal moment works now. It is asking that you stop searching for the answers outside and instead dig deeper inside.

It is calling you to a new more authentic, meaningful and worthwhile level of potential, purpose and impact. It is asking you to step beyond the business as usual straight jacket you have so become accustomed to - into serving the shapeshifting of systems that is currently taking place.

Its Starts With The Inner Transformation

The real work here is to retrieve those lost parts of you that you disowned to mould yourself to the status quo - and to bring them forward, playing at full volume, into your life, work, and leadership.

To not just be the perfect good soldier who ignores their true heart, not the pleaser who betrays their unique brilliance, not the lone rebel without a cause others can rally around. And instead to be the purpose-led leader you are here to be.

By asking yourself - Where do you need to be truer to yourself - to what is innate? Where could you be more aligned to your unique way of doing things - to what makes you original and memorable? Where could you speak up more powerfully for what you actually care about - and open up the new possibilities that others can't see yet?

This is how you navigate this kind of change. You evolve the world by being truly, uniquely and fully you. Remembering who you were always meant to be before the system told you who you should be.

It Is About Intentionally Building The Future

And at this moment in time, we have to also dig deeper into what this means for our collective future.

We have created systems that have cut us off from aspects of our humanity. Now, we are being called to remember what it truly means to be human and to create the future from that truth.

It is not just about sustaining what already exists - it is about imagining and building what comes next - in line with a greater level of flourishing within ourselves, with each other and with the planet itself.

We are literally the ones meant to be building this new plane as we fly it. That takes courage, imagination, and above all, up-levelling our individual and communal capacity to intentionally create the future.

It means going beyond the survival personality you built to fit into the status quo. And reclaiming the self that is here to shape what comes next. The you who has the misfit qualities we need to build the future we actually want to see. That is what this extraordinary pivotal moment is truly calling us to all do.

And for those of you who know this is your work now, I am just about to start a new live cycle of The Purpose-Led School where I guide you to activate your foundations as a purpose-led leader - learning to walk your unique path by trusting your unique self, adding your unique value and engaging in your unique message. The roles that used to exist may not anymore. So it is not just about applying for what is out there - it is about shifting your whole thinking about it.

From needing something, to offering something. From good student of what currently exists to inspiring partner of what will come next. From “How do I prove I am good enough?” to “Where can I add real value in a new way?”

At its core, it is about reframing how we approach work in a changing world. Your CV and cover letter still matter, but they are not enough. The people who are succeeding are proactively articulating their value - and demonstrating it meaningfully.

For example, one leader I supported created a full well thought out strategy for the company that he brought to the interview. That changed everything and he got the job. Another called each application a work of art - a way to express her unique contribution and leadership.

What we actually want to be focusing on is to create roles from scratch. And that is what is happening - even in traditional sectors - by listening for what really needs solving now.

It is about clarity: What is the value I want to provide? To whom? And how can I showcase it visibly, meaningfully and strategically? In a way that is not pitching, but inviting.

When you do that, you stop chasing what is disappearing - and start shaping what is emerging.

The truth is: the value system itself is shifting. What used to be valued may no longer be. But that doesn’t mean you have no value. What it does mean is that you get to help define what is valuable next.

Partnering to solve real problems creates opportunity - and opens unexpected doors. Networking becomes collaboration, not performance. You become known as someone who is a resource - who sees what matters and shows up to help.

That is how new roles get created. I have done this myself - and so have many of my clients. A good example of where this has worked is the sustainability field.

So don’t just focus on finding. Focus on articulating your value so clearly that others want to build with you.

You are not here to just fill a gap in what is falling away. You are here to shape what comes next and create your place in it.

And that starts with shifting from ‘to find or not to find’ — to ‘what is the value I want to provide, and how can I use that to co-create what is next? As the basis for creating a new role - that might not even exist yet.

Specific Quotes:

“It is this experience where it is not just you that is losing your role - there seems to be mass layoffs in a particular sector. That is because the whole world of work is going to be shape-shifting.”

“After enough rejections, you start to wonder, are you good enough?”

“The real question is: how are you actually approaching that job search - and how are you thinking about it?”

“Stop focusing on to find or not to find; start focusing on, can I actually create something here?”

“You are not selling yourself - you are reflecting together on problems that people have.”

“Someone will give you a job because they can see how you are going to be able to add the value they need.”

“We have to stop being rabbits in a headlight, just transfixed by the shrinking sector.”

“Each application can be like a work of art - artistry - that expresses your value.”

“You want to be perceived as a resource.”

“Where do I really want to add value, and what does that actually look like?”

“You need to be anchored in the value that you want to provide. What is the value you really want to provide — and to whom?”

“One client literally sat down and created a strategy for the organization - that is a completely different conversation.”

“You are not just listing past experience - you are showing how you can add the value that is actually needed now.”

“You want to be seen as a resource - someone who connects people to solutions and creates possibilities.”

“It’s a shift from the energy of needing something to being in a place of partnering to create something useful.”

“I listened to people about the actual problems they were trying to solve - not the ones I assumed they were solving.”

“Instead of ‘What role can I find?’ it’s: ‘How can I partner to create a role based on the value I want to provide?’”

“It’s not just about matching your CV - it’s about starting a new kind of conversation.”

“The people who are really succeeding are those who are showcasing their value meaningfully.”

“A lot of the roles that exist now didn’t exist a few years ago - they were created because people articulated a new kind of value.”

“You can influence getting jobs created for you when you really understand what others value - and connect that to what you would love to offer.”

“Every job I had after my career change was created for me - because I got really good at articulating my value.”

“Stop obsessing over the end of your old role - start asking: how does the value I bring fit into what is emerging now?”

“We are in a time where what has value and what we perceive has value is shifting — and we need to catch up with that in our minds. He thanked me for talking about the system shift we are in. We were reflecting on how not many in his circle were actually willing to talk about it and meaningfully address it.

I shared how I was seeing most leaders right now reacting to the overwhelm from a reactive stress response. And as such being in denial and avoidance, trying to pretend we are still in business as usual, that this is just a blip and that we will get back to 'normal' soon. Or are doubling down on existing tools and doing what they have always done - even when the sectors and jobs they are in are being directly affected.

So I wanted to provide a 'survival kit' - a different lifeline that is fit for the purpose of navigating the system shift we are in.

Wherever you are at in terms of change, here are 4 questions you can focus on to ground and anchor yourself in these times. ‘It is a set of four questions that you can ask yourself to help you move from just reacting to what's happening to getting your power and agency back around it. So that you can actually create something better out of it.’

The truth is that you will be able to create something new out of this. But first you have to take care of yourself and manage your mind and emotions. And this is what I help you with here.

EPISODE OVERVIEW

It is hard to deny that we are living through chaotic and uncertain times. The sheer pace and scale of change - the sustainability crisis, AI disruption, political instability - can leave even the most capable leaders feeling overwhelmed, disoriented, and powerless.

Many of us find ourselves spinning our wheels, trying to keep up, yet sensing that “business as usual” no longer works. That is why I wanted to share something practical. A simple tool you can use to meet this overwhelm and start to get your power back: four questions that can help you shift from reacting to creating.

The truth is, big changes - especially the ones we didn’t choose - often leave us with the sense that we have lost our agency. We feel at the mercy of what is happening, unable to control the outcome.

Yet these four questions can reorient us. They remind us that even in the most difficult circumstances, we have choices about how we respond and what we create next. And this isn’t just about individual resilience. At a time when our collective systems are also shapeshifting, these questions become a way to reorient ourselves, find new solid ground and retrieve our agency. So that we can contribute to shaping what comes next.

The first question is: What is my state?

This means noticing your emotional state - especially how you may be caught in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.

These survival reactions are normal when change feels like an attack on our safety - whether physical, emotional, intellectual, or spiritual. But the problem is that they are an automatic reaction, rather than an appropriate response to what is actually happening. And we tend to be a one trick pony - often defaulting to the same one or the same cocktail, over and over.

By simply noticing your reaction, you begin to take ownership of it. You see it for what it is - an automatic mechanism - and in that moment, you reclaim the possibility of choosing a different response.

The second question is: Where am I on the change curve?

Shock, denial, fear, anger, bargaining, grief are stages we all move through when facing change. The key is not to get stuck.

Each stage carries information about what you need, and by naming where you are, you stop fighting the process and start moving through it.

As you integrate the change, you begin to get your agency back. That is when new possibilities and hope can return.

The third question is: What do I want to create?

In the chaos, it is easy to lose sight of this. But even when it feels like the light has been switched off, asking this question points your attention in the right direction.

You may not have the full answer yet, but by holding the question, you begin to surface deeper truths about what really matters most to you. And that clarity becomes the building blocks for creating something better.

The fourth question is: What can I do?

Imposed change often leaves us feeling lost and powerless. Focusing on what you can do puts you back in the driving seat.

Start small. One step, then another. It doesn’t have to be perfect or final. The point is to remember you can walk through even the most difficult changes.

And ask yourself too: Who can support me? These times can feel lonely, and part of your power comes from remembering you don’t have to do this alone.

If you ask yourself these four questions daily - even for a week - you will find something start to shift. This is how we move through overwhelm in times of systemic change. This is how we retrieve our agency, step back into creation, and begin to shape a future that is more authentic, more aligned, and ultimately more human. And as our systems continue to shift, these same questions can guide us collectively, not just to survive what is coming - but to take our place, play our part and create what comes next.

10 Specific Quotes

“When we are faced with big change, especially when it is not a change we have chosen, it can feel like we have lost all our agency.”

“Our nervous system tends to go into automatic survival mode - fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.

"By simply noticing your state, you begin to take ownership of it. You create a tiny space between reaction and choice.”

“On the change curve, shock, denial, fear, anger, bargaining, and grief are stages - each giving you information.”

“We don’t bypass the emotional stages of change, but we also don’t have to get stuck in them.”

“A powerful question to ask yourself in the midst of all this is: what do I actually want to create? It is the doorway back to your capacity to create something good out of this - and it reorients you toward possibility”

“You don’t have to know the full answer. Just holding the question already changes the way you see things and how you show up.”

Take a step, then another, then another. Taking even a small step reminds you that you can walk through this change.”

“Who can support me? These times can feel lonely. Remember you don’t have to do this alone."

“Start asking yourself these questions daily, and in 30 days you could be in a very different place.”

Thanks for reading, listening to and watching The Purpose-Led Adventure! For decades, most of us lived in a world of relative stability. The systems may not have been perfect, but the rules were clear and the paths laid out. Now that stability has given way to a new normal - one defined by the 3Us of uncertainty, the unstable, and the unknown.

The problem is that we are still trying to navigate as if we were in the old world. Most of us were taught to build our sense of security from the outside in: if I have the job, the salary, the home, the status - then I will feel safe. But when the outside is unstable, that whole foundation is rocky and starts to collapse. Which is why we cannot keep relying on it in the same way.

We need to flip the script.

Security now has to come from the inside out: from our sense of purpose, our identity, and our belief in what is possible for us. That is the shift that we are needing to make. From waiting for certainty to return, to resourcing ourselves to move through this uncertainty with awareness, choice and alignment. Harnessing our own capacity to create and chart our own true course through this chaotic uncertain reality - that is now our new normal.

It is a bit like skiing. On-piste, the tracks are laid out and the rules are clear. Off-piste, the terrain is uncharted, shifting and unpredictable. You cannot just point your skis downhill and hope for the best. You have to rely on your own innate sense, your responsiveness, your ability to meet whatever comes. You choose how you get down that mountain - by trusting in your own unique way and laying the tracks that become your own.

That is where we are now: collectively off-piste, with no existing map to follow - apart from the one that we choose. Together looking at the new blank page that is waiting to be written by each one of us.

And that means that the rules of “business as usual” no longer apply. The work of this moment is to stop waiting for stability to return. And to start building the inner resources that allow us to navigate this profound transition as our new normal. To retrieve our innate agency. And out of the uncertainty, to create what we want to see next.

We are all being faced with an unprecedented level of change. Dealing with that is not easy. In this episode we explore how in the face of uncertainty, grasping externally for control won’t help us. And that what will, is to turn inwards and to create what is true for us from there.

10 Purpose-Led Quotes:

“What that means is that we can’t keep navigating in the same way.”

“Most of us build our security from the outside in: if I have the job, the salary, the relationship, the home, the status - then I feel safe.”

“When the outside is unstable, that whole foundation starts to collapse.
